VSC Meeting, September 2021

Super excited to welcome Mark Diamond to share his work & the latest in 3D trends, Pascal Martiné to teach you about creating side-by-side stereos entirely on your iPhone and *YOU* in our first community stereography show!!! More details below. See you this Sunday, September 5th @ 2pm EDT / 8pm CEST

My Magic Cards

My Magic Cards

What kind of entertainment would you have as a Soviet kid growing up in the 1980s? A couple of dolls, clothes; metallic constructor sets, the vinyl recordings of children’s stories; some cassettes with popular Russian songs, and a bunch of filmstrips. These things were in almost everyone’s possession – at least, that’s how I remember my friend’s toys. However, I had something very special – a set of stereo cards, along with a simple stereoscope that looked like binoculars.

Stereo photography to go — from start to finish in 3 minutes

Stereo photography to go — from start to finish in 3 minutes

This tutorial is based on my personal workflow for creating side-by-side stereos and includes several apps for taking, aligning, combining, and post-processing stereophotos. From shot to post, all files stay entirely on the smartphone. Depending on the occasion I slightly modify my workflow by adding, replacing, or skipping particular steps. But on average the process really comes down to 3 minutes to get a finished side-by-side stereophoto.

Vancouver Island Secrets

Vancouver Island Secrets

This gallery is a small representation of the different landscapes on Vancouver Island (Canada). You probably won’t recognize any of these locations unless you’re an islander like me, but I’m proud to live in a place with such varied natural beauty! Come visit some time!

VSC Anniversary, August 2021

VSC Anniversary, August 2021

Hey, 3D friends! Please join us for our first anniversary this coming Sunday, August 8th. We’ll share a fun, short 6‑scene 3D drama created by Thomas Asch and inspired by “A Rake’s Progress” by William Hogarth. Then we’ll open it up to all of you, our community members, to share a treasured 3D item or photo you’re excited about during our popular Show & Tell segment. Can’t wait to see your faces and your cool stuff this coming Sunday at 2:00 pm EDT / 19:00 GMT / 8:00 pm CET. Our meetings are always free — just register if you haven’t already.

Bright loose images for the Monumental Art series

Bright loose images for the Monumental Art series

I am recording and documenting in 3D wherever I go, such as Galleries and Museums, and especially, when a Monumental Installation by an Interdisciplinary artist, or artists takes place.

How to Make Flush Mount Stereo Cards

How to Make Flush Mount Stereo Cards

Here is a step-by-step guide to making flush mount stereo cards. Flush mount means cards in which the artwork extends all the way to the edge of the card itself, as shown in the photos.

Bugging Out!

Bugging Out!

I have always been fascinated by animals and since I’m able to take macro photos, insects have become my favorite stereo subjects.

Space handpainting

Space handpainting

The following six images show some of my ‘space handpaintings’ that were created using the 3D painting app Blender. I used to export them as a video and let the visitor ‘fly’ through my little painted worlds. More recently I’ve tried exporting them as stereoscopic pairs to enable visitors to watch them in real 3D. These are the first results.

VSC Meeting, July 2021

VSC Meeting, July 2021

Hey, 3D friends! Don’t forget that our July 4th meeting has been moved to July 11th to accommodate the 4th of July holiday in the United States. We have exciting presentations planned — from astral stereophotography to 3D monumental art to making your own stereo cards! See you on Sunday, July 11th 2021 at 2:00 pm EDT / 18:00 GMT / 8:00 pm CEST

Nostalgia, Semiotics & Weird Stuff: A Guide to Collecting View-Master

Nostalgia, Semiotics & Weird Stuff: A Guide to Collecting View-Master

It’s probably safe to assume that most people were introduced to 3D images via View-Master. Introduced at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the handheld 3D viewer was a very popular format that sold literally billions of products from the 1940s right on through the 2000s. Here you’ll find a brief history of View-Master, some images from my collection and key content categories that may be of interest to those looking to start or grow their collections.

Historical Stereo Extractions

Historical Stereo Extractions

The scenes from historic documentaries presented here were up until now only viewable in 2D, but thanks to the horizontal movement of the camera and/or the object within the video, I was able to ‘extract’ stereo pairs by combining selected stills without the use of (artificial) manipulation. As a result, I was able to create 3D images from 2D video, in some cases almost a century “after the fact”.
