VSC Meeting, April 2025
Sunday, April 6th 2025, 2pm EDT / 8pm CEST
We are pleased to invite you to our next VSC meeting on Sunday, April 6th, featuring a two-part program that promises both historical insight and creative community engagement.
We are honored to welcome Dr. Peter Blair, author and photo historian, for a presentation on the pivotal role Scotland played in the development of stereoscopy. Following Dr. Blair’s presentation, we will host our community slideshow, featuring stereo images submitted by members on the theme ANIMALS. This is an opportunity to share your work, enjoy the creativity of fellow members, and explore the beauty of the natural world through stereoscopy.
We look forward to an engaging and inspiring meeting. See you on April 6th!

History
Scotland — The Cradle of Stereoscopy
Dr. Peter Blair

The commercial take-off of stereoscopy was due to the ingenuity and enthusiasm of Sir David Brewster, Principal of St Andrews in Scotland. By 1856 Brewster could claim that 500,000 of his stereoscopes had been sold and 3D had become by far the most popular format of photograph. Scottish photographers were early adopters of the technology, with George Washington Wilson already exhibiting stereoscopic photographs in 1853. His work became a benchmark against which other photographers were measured. Around 200 Scottish stereo-photographers have been identified and a selection of their best work will be displayed.
