VSC Meeting, October 2026
Sunday, October 11th 2026 at 2:00 pm EDT / 8:00 pm CEST
This time we have two presentations that take us to very different landscapes and periods in the history of stereoscopy. Andrew Lauren will explore how stereoscopic photography documented the opening up and development of the Grand Canyon, preserving views of a landscape and its early visitors that have long since disappeared. Gert-Jan Wolkers, meanwhile, will bring us much closer to the present with his personal approach to stereo photography and 3D timelapse, including recent work made in the Dutch dunes with compact digital equipment.
We’re looking forward to our next Zoom meeting on Sunday, October 11th.

History
The Grand Canyon in 3D
Andrew Lauren

The Grand Canyon in Arizona is a world-renowned destination, visited by nearly 5 million people each year. That wasn’t always the case. Almost 160 years ago it was essentially a blank space on a map, and very few people went there, other than miners, until a railroad line reached it 125 years ago.
Stereoscopic photography documented much of this evolution and preserves images of these nearly forgotten developments. Andrew gives an overview of that story using images from his personal collection.

Photographer Spotlight
Mornings in the Dutch Dunes
Gert-Jan Wolkers

Gert-Jan’s interest in 3D was sparked by View-Master reels as a child. He began stereo photography at 19 with a Pentax ME and beam splitter, later used custom-built analogue and digital stereo cameras, and has taken his gear to places as far away as Antarctica. In recent years he has been drawn to 3D timelapse, shooting with his iPhone (using apps like i3DPhotocam and i3DSteroid by Masuji Suto) and, since 2024, the Xreal Beam Pro, whose wide-angle capabilities he loves.

Many of you will know him as president of the Dutch stereo club for nearly 12 years, editor of its magazine for nearly 8, and former (Vice-)President of the International Stereoscopic Union.
