History

Audacious: New Women, College Girls, and the Gender Fluid in Historical Stereography

Melody Davis

At the turn of the twentieth century, commercial stereographic companies in the U.S. published narrative views that reflected changing gender and sexual roles through popular topics of the day–the New Woman, the college girl, the professional and independent woman, and the salesman. Comedy became a safety valve for a society confronted with challenges to what was perceived as natural truths. As the gag became a gaze, the comedic stereoview transitioned into depictions of independence and expressions of plural sexual identities.
